Why Should I Use Sunscreen every day?

The sun can cause havoc to your skin 365 days a year. So don’t think because you don’t see the sun you should skip the SPF; up to 80% of the sun rays can pass through the clouds. According to the CDC, the sun’s UVA rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. So it’s important to include it in your daily skincare routine.

How Does The Sun Damage My Skin?

The sun damages your skin due to the ultraviolet radiation that is in the sunlight. Ultraviolet radiation can be classified into different types of rays based on the wavelength. The two that we are exposed to daily are UVA and UVB.

UVA: These are the rays that cause you tan, premature fine lines and wrinkles, and damage to the skin. They penetrate your skin more deeply. Exposure causes genetic damage to cells on the innermost part of your top layer of skin, where most skin cancers occur.

UVB: These are the rays responsible for sunburns and most skin cancers.

What Type of Sunscreen Do I need?

The three most important things you should look for in your sunscreen according to the American Academy of Dermatology are:

  • Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays)
  • SPF 30 or higher
  • Water-resistant

How Often Should I Apply Sunscreen and Where?

You should apply sunscreen to any part of your body that won’t be covered by clothes. You should be applying sunscreen to your skin when your outdoors and should reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

To incorporate sunscreen into our morning skincare routine we like to apply it after we use our Yellow Chartreuse moisturizing facial serum as our last step in our skincare routine.

Is A Higher SPF Better Than A Lower SPF?

An SPF of 30 blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays, a higher SPF will only block a slightly higher amount. No sunblock will ever block 100% of the sun’s rays.
